North Residence Hall Renovation and Addition

With its highly visible location on campus, this project reinforces architectural themes supporting residential life that were established by the BWBR-designed renovation of nearby McCalmont Residence Hall in 2014. The renovation of the existing building provides programmatic and infrastructure upgrades that improve functionality, efficiency, and building code compliance, as well as an interior finishes refresh. Additions accommodate a new accessible building entrance, expanded bath/shower rooms on each floor, and new stairs.

The design enhances the student experience with rooms that have plentiful electrical outlets, dimmable lights, and movable furniture. Unique spaces include a dedicated meditation/contemplation space, social spaces/student lounges, and private study areas equipped with easy video call access. Student amenities include shared kitchen spaces, a game room, and laundry facilities – all equipped with drop-in study spaces.

Sustainable features include LED lighting throughout and wood ceiling panels reclaimed from trees that had to be removed during the project. New energy-efficient windows and upgraded mechanical systems increase the overall efficiency of the building.
