Responding to the fast-changing landscape for outpatient healthcare services, the 121,700-square-foot Park Nicollet Clinic & Specialty Center in Maple Grove went from an idea to reality in under two years.
The success of bringing that project to market recently earned it a 2016 Design-Build Merit Award from the Design-Build Institute of America-Upper Midwest Region.
Designed by BWBR and constructed by Ryan Companies, the Park Nicollet facility provides primary care, more than 25 specialty services, an on-site pharmacy, optical services, and orthopedic acute injury care. The center also features a pediatric urgent care center and a same-day surgery center to serve one of the fastest growing areas of the metropolitan Twin Cities market.
“The pace at which the healthcare landscape is changing, both in demand for services and the providers wanting to serve patients, is challenging most healthcare organizations,” said Brad Krump, AIA, a principal at BWBR who led the design of the project. “We’ve been fortunate to have a long and successful relationship with Park Nicollet to explore how best to respond to the landscape. It’s good to be recognized for bringing such a great patient resource to life in an efficient and cost-effective manner.”
Design-build was the preferred delivery method to respond to the fast accelerating demand for outpatient care in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis. Begun early in 2014, the facility represents best practices in a design-build project delivery – planning, design, development, and construction – allowing for flexibility to accommodate changes in the healthcare environment. The collaboration and communication of the design-build team allowed delivery of the first phase four weeks ahead of schedule.
The decision to go design-build not only worked in tangent with Park Nicollet’s lean principle 3P Process, but it also made sense for this project due to the site, the speed with which they wanted to bring the new facility online, and the existing knowledge and experience of the design-build team members. The end result is an attractive, high performing, energy-efficient clinic and surgery center that was designed within budget and with minimal changes.
“Effective and responsive communication allowed our design-build team to move fluidly through each phase of the project while also informing the client of new options to meet and exceed their delivery care goals,” Krump said.
