Jaharis Science Laboratories and Hastad Hall
Carroll University
This two-phased science project created a new science building at Carroll University, supporting the institution’s strategic plan to “improve academic quality and strengthen the core educational experience for students.” The new center replaced an outdated existing building for Wisconsin’s oldest four-year institution of higher learning.
Phase 1 Jaharis Science Laboratories includes highly flexible undergraduate research and instruction labs for chemistry and biochemistry, biology, environmental science, anatomy, and physics. The design elegantly introduces a modern and state-of-the-art science facility into the surrounding historic buildings. New materials and concepts are woven into the traditional, becoming an integral part of the campus fabric and setting the stage for the following phase.
Phase 2 Hastad Hall houses multi-use classroom and study spaces, along with lab spaces for the physics/engineering, exercise science, and nursing programs. The addition’s design uses local limestone, terra-cotta panels, and similar design details to seamlessly integrate with the Jaharis Science facility. A technology-rich, hands-on nursing simulation lab immerses students directly into a modern-day hospital environment and is fully equipped with cutting-edge medical manikins, a birthing suite, and adjoining control/observation rooms. The first green roof in Waukesha rounds out the science experience for today’s students.
