ND Heritage Center and State Museum, Military Gallery Expansion
State of North Dakota
Located on North Dakota’s State Capitol grounds, adjacent to the BWBR-designed State Lab, this museum addition is grounded in its guiding purpose: to Honor, Educate, and Inspire. Designed in partnership with Architect of Record Zerr Berg Architects, in conjunction with world-renowned exhibit designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the new military gallery will facilitate personal encounters with history, incorporating indigenous and humanitarian perspectives alongside personal stories and artifacts from conflict.
The expansion will complement the existing capitol campus and museum aesthetics, with carefully considered compatibility of massing and materials, while paving the way for thoughtful future gallery additions. A new entrance and great hall stand out as cornerstone features, and a flexible event space with a capacity of up to 400 people will provide the community with a large-scale gathering space. The exterior courtyard is being crisply defined and transformed with reinvigorated purpose and intentional activity spaces that will maximize its function and usability.
