BWBR and BCRA partnered with the State of Washington on an immersive predesign and programming process for new community-based facilities for civilly committed individuals. Informed by national trends and customized for local needs, the State of Washington is improving access to behavioral health services for this sensitive and often under-served population. This same team then designed the Maple Lane campus, followed by the Clark County campus.

Maple Lane is a new 16-bed care building on the Department of Corrections Maple Lane School Campus and is home to the State’s first decentralized, community-based mental health care campus. The site layout visually shields the adjacent DOC campus from resident sightlines and allows for future expansion while maintaining security and access to the rest of the campus.

To achieve zero net energy usage, the project uses sustainable strategies such as full infiltration of stormwater run-off, glazing that maximizes views while minimizing heat gain, and solar panels sited for maximum energy capture.
